Cannes Market Breakthrough: Heart Pictures Partners with Nikkatsu to Launch Global Sales for 'Black Coffee' Internationally
JAKARTA — Indonesian production house, Heart Pictures, has achieved a milestone on the international stage by bringing its latest drama feature, Black Coffee, to the global market. Through a strategic collaboration at the Cannes Film Market, Heart Pictures officially partnered with Japanese cinema giant,
Nikkatsu Corporation, to handle the film's international sales and distribution.
This bold move underscores Heart Pictures' commitment to elevating arthouse dramas that showcase authentic local cultures onto the world stage.
A True Story Immersed in Gayo Culture
Directed by Jeremias Nyangoen, Black Coffee is inspired by the true story of a blind married couple working as coffee farmers in the Gayo Highlands of Central Aceh. The narrative centers on their profound emotional struggle and deep yearning to be blessed with a child in their old age.
To bring this powerful story to life, Heart Pictures entrusted the leading roles to two of Indonesia's legendary method actors, Reza Rahadian and Sha Ine Febriyanti. The film also features Asmara Abigail alongside local Gayo actors, beautifully weaving the scenic landscapes of Aceh and the traditional oral art of Didong into the film.
Attracting a Japanese Cinema Giant
The exceptional production quality delivered by Heart Pictures successfully caught the attention of
Nikkatsu Corporation, Japan’s oldest and highly selective film studio.
Nikkatsu recognized that the pure human drama within Black Coffee carries a universal resonance that global audiences are eager to see.
"What drew us to 'Black Coffee' was the universality of its themes. The commercial industry in Indonesia is already very strong, but we feel that arthouse dramas like this are precisely what is ready to be 'discovered' by the international market," stated Emico Kawai from Nikkatsu's international sales team.
This historic international partnership was bridged by Nora Mediana of Moxienotion, who served as the international strategy consultant for Heart Pictures in Jakarta.
Heading Toward the World Stage
The collaboration with
Nikkatsu which previously found success marketing Indonesian films like Headshot (2016) serves as a massive stepping stone for Heart Pictures. Through Nikkatsu's extensive global network, Black Coffee is projected for wide distribution across Europe and the Americas, as well as a run through top-tier international film festivals, proving the creative power of Indonesian production houses on the world stage. ***
